Replacing a Combustion Vehicle with an EV: Spanish CAE and TRA050

Technical and documentary requirements for TRA050 when replacing a combustion vehicle with a battery-electric vehicle, without promising CAEs.

Updated 10 August 2026Reading time : 4 min

TRA050 concerns a real replacement chain, not the simple addition of an electric vehicle to a household or fleet. The combustion vehicle and battery-electric successor must be individually identifiable, linked to the relevant holder and shown to deliver a comparable mobility service. Registration dates, category, energy inputs and the former vehicle’s destination require consistent records. Only the current TRA050 sheet decides the exact conditions and calculation.

Establish that a combustion vehicle was truly replaced

Start with a paired record containing registration number, VIN where required, category, model, holder and use for both vehicles. The old unit should be an internal-combustion vehicle and the successor a pure battery-electric vehicle within the live TRA050 definitions. Similar model names are not identity evidence. Assign one pairing identifier to all records so vehicle identity and holder continuity can be checked without inference.

Distinguish replacement from fleet growth. If the combustion vehicle remains in normal use, is reassigned without satisfying the sheet or the electric vehicle serves new mileage, the one-to-one premise may fail. Map disposal, deregistration, transfer or other permitted destination with dates and documents. The old-vehicle destination should be evidenced under the precise route allowed by the current TRA050 wording.

Preserve the identity and chronology of both vehicles

Build a chronology from order, invoice, payment, registration, delivery and the old vehicle event. Inconsistent dates can indicate that two independent transactions were paired retrospectively. Keep the holder relationship visible through each step, including leasing or company-group arrangements if the sheet addresses them. A dated event table should expose gaps, overlaps and retrospective pairings before the energy calculation begins.

Record the former vehicle’s category, fuel, authorised consumption input and representative annual distance under the official method. Do not select a favourable real-world fuel figure from an unrelated driver. Likewise, use the electric consumption value and factors prescribed for the exact successor or category. Keep official consumption inputs and distance evidence traceable to the exact category and paired vehicles.

Calculate comparable mobility with authorised inputs

Mobility service should remain comparable in purpose and scale. A small electric city car does not necessarily replace a high-mileage van, and a van bought for a new route may not replace a parked car. Explain category, payload, route and kilometre assumptions without inventing continuity that records cannot show. Document why payload, route and annual use remain comparable where body style or operating role changes.

Apply the current TRA050 formula, units and annualisation limits exactly. Charging losses, electricity factors or reference consumption must follow the PDF rather than a custom total-cost model. Keep grants, tax benefits and charger savings outside the energy calculation unless an explicit rule says otherwise. Freeze the applicable formula version and show every factor, unit conversion and annual-distance limit in the workbook.

Assemble ownership, registration and transaction evidence

Collect both registration certificates, technical specifications, purchase or lease documents, invoice and payment evidence, delivery confirmation and any required old-vehicle destination record. Names, tax identifiers, addresses and dates should reconcile. Redact public copies only after preserving an auditable original. Reconcile names and identifiers across registration, transaction and payment records before redaction or submission.

Photographs can support identity when they show registration, VIN area or distinctive vehicle context, but they do not replace official records. Keep digital files named by the paired vehicle record. For fleet batches, use a controlled pairing table so one retired vehicle cannot support two electric acquisitions. Batch controls should reject duplicate VINs and registration numbers automatically across both sides of every pairing.

Exclude hybrids, additions and broken replacement chains

Exclude plug-in hybrids, range extenders or vehicles outside the pure-electric definition even when marketed as electrified. Investigate demo registrations, imports, dealer ownership, related-party transfers and long gaps between events. These details determine whether there was a genuine eligible replacement rather than a paper match. Escalate imports, demonstrations, related-party transfers and long event gaps for individual eligibility review.

The code reference does not guarantee eligibility, accepted savings, issuance, validation or remuneration. Review the live sheet, annexes and transitional provisions before commitment and again before filing. Value the project on operating and mobility merits, with the CAE estimate shown as a conditional scenario subject to documentary review. The reference codes for this review are TRA050. Present a downside case in which documentary review reduces or removes the provisional CAE value.
